Homespun Crocheted Basket
This project is for the craft-crazies who love homespun and also love to crochet. Basically you can tear homespun into strips, stitch the ends together, roll it into a ball and crochet with it! Homespun is perfect for this because it has no right or wrong side so your don't have to mind which way your fabric strips are laying when you crochet. This was my first attempt at fabric crochet and it turned out great! The fabric made this basket really stiff and the sides stand up very nicely.
The instructions below are very general and assume that you already have basic knowledge of crochet, crochet stitches and methods. Below these instructions are some pics of the work-in-progress with notes added. I really, really enjoyed combining my love of homespun and my love of crochet! I bet you will too and we'd love to see pictures if you make something amazing!

- Tear 1 yard of fabric into 1.25" wide strips. Pull out all the excess strings that are coming loose. This is a tedious job but your fabric "yarn" will be much easier to handle if you do this up front. This basket used exactly 1 yard of fabric. If you are planning larger, increase your fabric accordingly.
- Stitch fabric strips together end to end and roll into a ball.
- Using a size 10mm/N crochet hook, stitch single crochet into a rectangle about 5" x 3". For me this was 5 rows, 10 single crochet per row.
- At this point, now make the next row of single crochet go all the way around the perimeter of the rectangle. Join to beginning stitch with a slip stitch and chain one. This is the first row of your basket sides.
- Continue to add rows to the basket until you have reached the height you desire (or run out of fabric!) In this example, I added five rows of single crochet to make the sides. Finished size of my basket is about 8 x 6 x 3 inches.
- Embellishments can easily be added if you wish. You can weave a contrasting ribbon or jute or fabric around the top to create a top border. Or add a simple bow like I did. Or just go wherever your imagination takes you! :-)
